Water Levels On The Shannon Must Be Lowered

By September 16, 2015No Comments

I have been in contact over the past few weeks with the OPW, Inland Waterways and the ESB to ensure that the levels of water on the River Shannon are lowered. We have had the wettest summer since 2009 and we need to ensure that farmers who have low lying lands in the Shannon basin are protested as far as possible. The level of growth this year has not been what it should be and we need to try to protect whatever bit of grass growth there is in these areas. We have to prevent farmers having to put stock indoors for as long as we can this winter which will keep their costs down. This is an ongoing problem for many years and I am calling on the various parties including the OPW, Inland Waterways and the ESB to treat this matter seriously and act to protect farmers who are vulnerable. After all it is their land that they flooding if they don’t act.
