The news today that people with cancer symptoms are to be sent to private clinics for ultrasound scans is welcome but far more needs to be done to shorten the huge waiting lists that are growing with every passing week. Cancer patients need a quick diagnosis so this initiative is certainly timely, but this idea must be put into operation for other conditions as well. We need to take decisive action on this problem and if it means that more and more people have to be treated in private hospitals or clinics or in facilities in the North of Ireland or even the UK then so be it. It is simply unacceptable that anyone should have to wait over 12 months to see a specialist or undergo elective surgery. The Dail resumes in the coming week and I will be raising this matter with Minister Varadkar at the first available opportunity.
