The announcement by the Taoiseach Micheal Martin earlier today is infuriating people right around this country, independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has claimed.
Since the announcement, the representative for the Roscommon-Galway constituency has fielded countless calls from angry constituents who have been left bemused and frustrated with the announcement that indoor hospitality has been delayed yet again.
Commenting in the wake of the announcement, Fitzmaurice said: “The Taoiseach needs to be very careful with what he is saying, as he is infuriating people right around the country.
“Quoting advice from NPHET and saying that the safest way to proceed with a return to indoor hospitality ‘is to limit access to those who have been fully vaccinated, or have recovered from Covid infection’.
“Is he living in the real world at all? Suggestions such as this are neither workable or policeable. If this became a reality, it would cause mayhem on the streets.
“How would someone running a restaurant or pub know if someone had recovered from Covid?
“As well as that, the majority of the young people in the country have yet to be even offered a vaccine as part of the roll-out programme – so they would be blacklisted from enjoying indoor hospitality from the get-go.
“This advice is completely impracticable and, frankly, it is frightening to think it would even be considered. This Government needs to stand on its own two feet and continue with the reopening of the country, rather than handing the reins to NPHET,” Fitzmaurice concluded.
