The news that the European Investment Bank is to loan NUI Galway 60 million Euro for campus development and student accommodation is to be welcomed and hopefully the development will proceed without objections or hold ups.
The loan will fund a new health sciences building and accommodation for 450 students and this is something that I have been proposing for the past number of years and other third level colleges throughout the country should follow the Galway lead on this issue. There are loans available at very competitive rates and to provide student accommodation would be self financing and would also help to ease pressure on the rental market throughout the country not to mention the jobs that would be provided at the construction stage.
I hope that these major developments can proceed without delay and that the red tape and bureaucracy that we see far too often affecting major infrastructutal projects like these can be kept to the bare minimum.
