GALWAY CO. COUNCIL PASS MOTION TO SEEK HELP FROM MINISTER SIMON COVENEY.

At a recent meeting of Galway County Council a motion was passed calling on the Council to write to Minister Simon Coveney asking him to engage urgently with his Northern Ireland counterpart with a view to immediately alleviating the problems that are currently causing a crisis for the export of Beef to Northern Ireland and England.     Cllr. Michael Fitzmaurice proposed the motion which was seconded by Cllr. Sean Canney and passed by the members of the Council.

Speaking in the Council chamber, Michael Fitzmaurice said that it was “an  ironic situation that Ireland can export beef to Italy and other European countries while, in this country, an invisible line, called the Border is posing real hardship for our farming community”

Cllr Michael Fitzmaurice also pointed out that we are now entering a new season for the export of weanlings and “if these problems are not addressed, up to one hundred thousand farmers across the country face stark consequences”

“This export market is important to farmers but it is also important to Marts and other small businesses in our towns. I am in constant contact with MEP Luke Ming Flanagan and he will be raising this issue at European level”.
