Confirmation from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, that an exemption for farmers for the burning of green waste has been reinstated must be welcomed, according to independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.
Reacting to the news, Fitzmaurice said: “I am glad to see that Minister Eamon Ryan and his Government colleagues have acknowledged the calls from the farming sector and reinstated the exemption.
“It is clear to see that the exemption is a practical tool for farmers where no other viable alternative exists.
“It includes co-operation between farmers, local authorities and the fire service and is only allowed to occur during a prescribed period.
“There was no value in permanently removing the exemption under the legislation for farmers and it is good to see the relevant ministers and departments listening to reason on the matter,” Fitzmaurice concluded.
