One of the measures in this weeks’ budget that I warmly welcome is the reduction given to hauliers with regard to road tax for vehicles. As someone who was involved in this industry in the past I was aware first hand of the problems that existed. Hauliers in this country were at a major disadvantage compared to their counterparts in the UK and indeed in recent times a levy on Irish hauliers in the UK had further worsened this situation. However the new measures announced by the Minister in the budget will level the playing field and I predict will lead to the creation of jobs in this sector. After years of lobbying for change in this sector, even before I was elected to public office, I welcome the new measures in this haulage industry.
