Allocations under the Community Enhancement Programme, revealed earlier, today have been welcomed by independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.
The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, confirmed that over 2,000 projects from right across the country would benefit from approximately €4.5 million in funding under the department’s programme.
The department explained that the programme provides capital grants to community groups to help them to enhance facilities in disadvantaged communities.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Fitzmaurice said: “The allocations announced as part of this programme are very welcome. They will fund a variety of projects across a number of communities.
“Almost 40 different projects will be funded as part of the programme in areas under the remit of both Roscommon and Galway County Councils.
“Roscommon will receive just shy of €133,000 to divide among 39 projects, while approximately €143,000 will be shared among 37 projects in Galway.
“This funding will go towards installing defibrillators, improving infrastructure in local communities, purchasing sports or gym equipment and much, much more.
“The majority of projects have been allocated in the reach of €1,000, but there are some larger projects.
“These include €10,000 being distributed to the Ballaghaderreen Childcare Center to replace floor covering and install CCTV as well as €15,000 being issued to Caltra Community Playground to install a footpath which would link the community center to the village.
“All of these projects will benefit communities right around the country. Hopefully the minister’s department will be able to facilitate the speedy drawdown of these funds and prevent any possibilities of delays,” Fitzmaurice concluded.
